AS the construction sector continues to evolve, the role of logistics in delivering major infrastructure and building projects has never been more important. For Tarmac, logistics is the backbone that keeps materials moving safely, efficiently and reliably to customers across the country, and now, the business is looking to grow its logistics team to support increasing demand.
From aggregates and asphalt to cement and concrete products, Tarmac manages one of the largest construction supply chains in the UK. Behind every successful delivery is a team of logistics professionals coordinating complex operations, building relationships with hauliers and customers, and ensuring materials arrive exactly where and when they are needed.
The scale of this operation is significant. Every year, hundreds of thousands of deliveries are planned and executed across the UK, supporting projects ranging from local road improvements to nationally significant infrastructure.
Innovation is also playing an increasingly important role in how materials are delivered to the site. In Scotland, Tarmac has introduced the country’s first electric mixer, supplying concrete to a range of projects across the Central Belt. In addition, Tarmac has pioneered the use of the Fliegl ejector trailer, enabling materials to be delivered in larger payloads directly onto the highway network while maintaining the quality of the Asphalt and reducing the risk of potholes forming in the future. This approach reduces vehicle movements, minimises disruption, and improves overall efficiency on site.
As construction activity continues to increase across Scotland, Tarmac is actively recruiting talented people to join its logistics teams and help shape the future of the industry.
One person who has built a rewarding career in logistics at Tarmac is Senior Logistics Manager Kathryn Musson. After studying psychology at university and starting her career in Royal Mail’s graduate programme, Kathryn discovered logistics almost by chance, but it quickly became a career she loved.
“I was offered the chance to move into logistics as a Distribution Manager,” she explains. “It was completely outside my comfort zone, but I decided to give it a go, and I’ve been in logistics ever since.”
After managing operations across the north of England in her previous role, Kathryn joined Tarmac three years ago and now oversees logistics operations across the North of England and Scotland. Her team plans and delivers around 300,000 deliveries each year, working with approximately 300 hauliers.
For Kathryn, the most rewarding aspect of the job is the people. “What I enjoy most are the relationships – working with my team, our hauliers and colleagues across the business. It’s fast-paced, high-energy and no two days are the same.”
She has also seen first-hand how the industry is evolving to become more inclusive. “Early on, I worried that I didn’t fit the stereotype of what a logistics leader should look like,” she says. “But I realised that being different is actually a strength. Diversity brings new perspectives, and that’s what delivers results.”
As construction continues to grow across Scotland, from infrastructure upgrades to new homes and commercial developments, the need for skilled logistics professionals will only increase. Tarmac is currently recruiting for a range of logistics roles and is encouraging people across Scotland who are looking for a dynamic, people-focused career to consider joining the team. Whether coming from a logistics background or exploring a new direction, the business offers opportunities to develop, progress and be part of projects that shape communities across the country.
