Glasgow eyes creation of ‘river park’ in city centre

CONSULTATION sessions on proposals to create a ‘unique’ destination on Glasgow’s waterfront are to be held on October 9.

The Glasgow city region deal project at Custom House Quay and Carlton Place, on the banks of the River Clyde in the city centre, would see the creation of a ‘river park’.

Acting as a ‘unique’ destination, the project would also look to enhance and protect the area’s townscape, heritage, and environment. The structural integrity of the quay walls would be addressed and existing open space renewed.

Glasgow City Council has appointed an expert design team, led by Hawkins-Brown, to develop a masterplan design for both the north and south banks in this stretch of the city centre waterfront, and to identify a phasing strategy to deliver the infrastructure works.

The first session in the City Chambers will take place between 11am – 2pm on October 9, with the second running from 5-8pm. There will also be an online survey from the morning of October 9 – running until October 26 – that will allow those taking part to find out more information and give feedback on the proposals.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of the Glasgow city region cabinet, said, “The Custom House Quay and Carlton Place project will transform a historic part of the waterfront in Glasgow city centre. These are very exciting proposals for a new and unique city destination, and the consultation sessions will give those taking part the chance to both learn much more about them and give their views on what they would like from the final design and masterplan.”
