MORRISON Construction is to begin work on a major upgrade of Aberdeen’s Union Street at the end of the month.
The Aberdeen City Council project focuses on the Union Street central area, between the Market Street and Bridge Street junctions, and will look to make it more attractive and vibrant whilst promoting walking and cycling.
Initial works beginning on April 29 will see trial holes being dug in the road to find exact location of utilities; the removal of all street furniture on the south side and then north side; removal of the road surface; and installation of drains, gully traps, ducting, and kerbing.
The wider project will see the creation of new pavements created with Scottish whin stone, as well as locally-sourced granite for the street surface, cycle lanes, and will also be used to help create a plaza entrance to the new market building.
Aberdeen City Council co-leader, councillor Christian Allard, said, “The upgrading work to Union Street Central is an opportunity to create attractive new streetscaping which will complement the new market building.
“The works are being carried out using local or Scottish materials which will help the economy as well as help to reinstate the central role of Union Street by making it more attractive.”
