REMEDIAL works are underway on two Highland schools affected by reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC).

Guidance was issued to the local authority by the Institution of Structural Engineers in April 2023, with a firm of chartered engineers undertaking detailed investigations and assessments at Charleston Academy and Nairn Academy during the summer holiday period.

A contractor was then appointed ‘as soon as practicable’ to carry out the works required to allow reoccupation of the affected areas. Remedial works to areas that were categorised as high risk were either completed by the start of the new school session or the areas made secure so that they are not accessible.

Remedial works to areas that were categorised as medium risk (i.e. to be completed within the next year) are underway and will continue during term time and over the October holiday period.

Chair of the housing and property committee at the Highland Council, councillor Glynis Campbell Sinclair, said, “The safety of our pupils and staff is of utmost priority. I am confident the council has taken the necessary steps at an early stage to establish the condition of the RAAC components in line with current guidance and best practice and carry out all essential works to allow reoccupation of the affected buildings. The further remedial works that are required to be completed within the next year are now underway.”
