The King visits UK-grown hemp insulation manufacturer in the Scottish Borders

HIS Majesty The King has visited IndiNature’s manufacturing facility in Jedburgh to see how UK-grown industrial hemp is processed into natural fibre insulation.

Founded in 2016, IndiNature opened its manufacturing mill in Jedburgh in 2021. The company manufactures natural fibre insulation using UK-grown industrial hemp – working with UK farmers and organisations across the construction supply chain. The facility currently employs 19 permanent staff, building on the Scottish Borders’ long-standing textile heritage.

The visit brought together representatives from across the industrial hemp, construction, investment and sustainability sectors, alongside local farmers and organisations supporting rural enterprise, reflecting the collaboration involved in developing UK supply chains for natural building materials.

Graeme Purves, operations manager at IndiNature, said, “It has been a tremendous honour to welcome His Majesty to our manufacturing facility in Jedburgh. Today’s visit reflects the dedication of our employees and the support of local farmers, partners and organisations who have been part of our journey. We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to reaching this milestone and to showcasing the manufacturing heritage and innovation of the Scottish Borders.”

Dr Jane Beasley, Zero Waste Scotland’s circular economy delivery director, added, “Zero Waste Scotland is proud to support IndiNature as they develop innovative circular solutions to keep valuable resources in use for longer.

“This work is a fantastic example of the circular economy in action – transforming what would otherwise become construction waste into sustainable building materials.

“Today’s visit is a fitting recognition of the important contribution IndiNature is making to Scotland’s transition to a more circular economy. We’re delighted to continue to work with IndiNature as they demonstrate how innovation can unlock greater value from resources, reduce waste, and help build a more resilient future for Scotland.”
