A time capsule has been discovered during early construction works on the project to rejuvenate Elgin Town Hall.
Moray Council is now calling on anyone who may have information on the discovery – which was found behind the foundation stone in the foyer entrance – to come forward.
The foundation stone, salvaged from Elgin’s original town hall on Moray Street, was relocated to ‘the new’ Elgin Town Hall on 29 June 1960, with the capsule placed inside at that time. After research with the library archives, little else is known about why it was placed there, who created it, or what may be inside.
Councillor Marc Macrae, chair of the economic development and infrastructure committee and growth deal lead, commented, “Elgin Town Hall has had a role to play in many of our lives over the years, and the stories from others could bring back forgotten memories of years gone by. As the important renovation work continues, we can plan how to honour the capsule by repositioning it back where it belongs in the town hall.”
Jackie Andrews, director at Elgin Town Hall for the community, added, The time capsule was an amazing discovery that could offer an exciting glimpse into the past and unlock forgotten items which take us back in time. If you have any information about the history of the capsule, we would love to hear from you.”
