A Springfield apprentice bricklayer has made company history by winning awards in every year of his apprenticeship at the UHI Moray Construction Prize Giving.
Dean Murdoch, 22, was recognised for his exceptional performance throughout his three-year apprenticeship – 2023, All Round Progress in Brickwork; 2024, Best Practical Bricklayer; 2025, Best All-Round Brickwork Apprentice.
This marks the first time a Springfield apprentice has received an award in each year of their training, which the firm said is a testament to Dean’s consistent hard work, craftmanship, and positive attitude.
Dean said, “I was really surprised to win for the third time – I didn’t expect it at all. It just shows that if you keep working hard and doing your best, it pays off. I think what’s really helped me is getting to work with different journeymen along the way. Everyone’s got their own way of doing things, and I’ve picked up something from each of them, which has made me a better all-round bricklayer.
“My apprenticeship has been hard work but really rewarding, and my advice to any new apprentice would be to take your time, focus on quality over speed, and keep going – the confidence and skills will come.”
As well as excelling on site, Dean also contributes to the wider business as an apprentice employee representative, helping to support new apprentices and playing a key role in Springfield’s 2024 Apprentice Open Day.
Springfield construction director, Darren Thomson praised Dean’s achievement, saying,“Dean is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through hard work, the right attitude, and a willingness to learn. He consistently delivers on site, takes pride in his work, and is always keen to support others. We’re all incredibly proud of him, this hat-trick of awards is thoroughly deserved.”
