Dandara donates hedgehog hotels to local school

Hedgehog donation

WALLYFORD Primary School pupils have been learning how to care for local wildlife thanks to a special donation from Dandara East Scotland.

The housebuilder, which is building new homes nearby at The Pines in Wallyford, has gifted two hedgehog hotels to the school’s Eco Group to support its work on biodiversity and environmental education.

Dandara sales consultant, Jacqueline Bathgate, visited the school to see pupils install the new hedgehog homes in the garden, where they will provide a safe shelter for hedgehogs over the winter months.

The Eco Group, run every Monday by pupil support worker Sian Howie, helps children learn about sustainability, wildlife habitats and how to make a positive difference in their community.

Jacqueline said, “It was brilliant to see how engaged the pupils were and how much pride they take in looking after their school environment. Encouraging children to understand and protect local wildlife is so important, and small actions like this can make a big difference. At Dandara, we’ve introduced hedgehog highways at The Pines so that hedgehogs can move freely between gardens, and this project ties in perfectly with our efforts to help these much-loved creatures thrive.”

Sian Howie added, “Our Eco Group gives pupils a chance to take practical action to care for the environment, whether that’s planting pollinator-friendly flowers, reducing waste or protecting local species. The children loved learning more about hedgehogs and were so excited to create a safe place for them in our garden. We’re really grateful to Dandara for the donation and for helping us make biodiversity such a fun, hands-on topic.”
