STRATHCLYDE Partnership for Transport (SPT) is developing a new vision and masterplan for Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow.

The organisation is working alongside New Practice and AtkinsRéalis on the proposals, which include revamps of the bus station itself as well as the surrounding public realm and how it interacts with the neighbouring locations. The distinctive design prioritises visibility, efficiency, and connectivity.

Featuring open areas and adaptable layouts to accommodate future changes and improvements, the design is said to allow for operational flexibility, while the public realm is designed to support stronger connections to surrounding areas and nearby hubs such as Queen Street Station and Buchanan Street Subway.

“The approach to the site promotes walking and wheeling, creating inclusive and accessible routes that integrate smoothly with the wider city centre. Importantly, the proposal establishes new development plots for office, residential, and retail floorspace, offering opportunities for high-quality urban growth that complements the station and contributes to a more connected, people-focused city centre.”
