CLARK Contracts has completed a £3.9 million refurbishment of The Briggait Clydeside Market Halls in Glasgow.
An official event was held to mark the moment, attended by representatives from Clark Contracts, Wasps Studios, the design team comprising Collective Architecture, Doig & Smith, Brown + Wallace and Narro Associates, and members of Glasgow City Council as well as representatives from the organisations who funded the project.
The works for Wasps Studios started in July 2023 and saw the safeguarding of the roof of the 1889 and 1904 Market Halls, general repairs to historic floors and walls, and the installation of new toilet facilities, a new entrance, a new café space, and a new reception area.
The enhancements have transformed the A-listed structure, opening up the historic building to Clyde Street and the river for the first time in over 50 years.
The project received funding from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, Glasgow City Heritage Trust, the Architectural Heritage Fund, Scottish Enterprise, the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund and Avondale.
Chris Cowie, interim CEO of Wasps, said, “We are incredibly proud to see the Briggait Clydeside Market Halls brought back into use. This transformation is not just about preserving a historic building – it’s about unlocking its potential for future generations. Thanks to the dedication of our partners and funders, the Briggait now stands as a vibrant, accessible space that will support creativity, community, and culture at the heart of Glasgow’s riverside.”
Michael Scanlan, director at Clark Contracts, added, “We are delighted to have delivered the major refurbishment of this iconic category A-listed building for Wasps. We hope that the building users and community enjoy this rejuvenated space for years to come.”
