PLANS have been launched to make Dumfries train station more accessible through the build of a new footbridge.
It comes as part of a Network Rail application for listed building consent to make the station more accessible, with it being a B-listed building.
Designs have been developed to be ‘sympathetic’ to the look and feel of the historic character of the station, with the footbridge set to feature lifts to allow step-free access across both platforms.
Dumfries residents were given a first look at the plans during a community event in the town earlier this month, where it was revealed that the construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed in 2024.
Karen McChesney, Network Rail’s town planning lead for the accessibility work at Dumfries station, said, “The level of interest in the new bridge at Dumfries station was great. We are grateful that the people of Dumfries took the time to come and see what we are proposing.
“After working with our architects and local stakeholders, we’re confident that we’ve made good choices on the proposed design that is being put forward for listed building consent.
“All being well, we are hopeful of progressing the work in Dumfries in autumn this year.”
