Balfour Beatty moves onto next phase of £14.5m Motherwell station upgrade

THE £14.5 million redevelopment of Motherwell Railway Station is to enter its third phase, ScotRail has announced.

It will see main contractor, Balfour Beatty, focus on the extension of the forecourt and internal concourse of the station – with ScotRail anticipating works to be completed in spring 2022.

Phase two involved work on the facility’s mezzanine corridor, which will act as the main artery between the concourse and platform two and three. A pre-cast staircase was also installed in the stairwell in the mezzanine corridor.

Once complete, the entire project will deliver an enhanced station forecourt and building with glazed roof; improved ticket retailing facilities; enhanced retail opportunities; upgraded staff facilities; refurbished toilets and waiting facilities; improvements to pedestrian and cycling access; and new facilities for taxis.

John MacDonald, ScotRail senior project manager, said, “Phase three of our redevelopment project will see some big changes for customers, who will soon be able enjoy the brand-new lounge area before they catch their train. In the meantime, access to platforms two and three will be different to what people will have become used to over the past year. Customers will now access platforms two and three using a stairwell within the station building. This is a return to the original passage through the station.

“We thank customers for their patience over the last year with the disruption caused during the phase two platform level works. The redevelopment of Motherwell station will transform facilities for customers and open up a wealth of possibilities for Motherwell. It will create a gateway to Glasgow, and beyond; with more travel options, better connections and all in a low-carbon way.”
