AN East Lothian councillor has renewed his call for improvements on the A1 north of the border.
Councillor Michael Veitch, the authority’s transport spokesman, made the call in response to the UK government’s announcement that it was about to sanction a multi-million pound upgrade to the A1 between Newcastle and Berwick.
Veitch has been campaigning with Scottish Borders and City of Edinburgh councils for some time to dual the rest of the Scottish section of the A1 between Dunbar and the border and to have a substantial upgrading of the City Bypass around Edinburgh.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted that the UK government is preparing to make such a massive investment in the A1 and its infrastructure in Northumberland. It can only be good for our local economy, in terms both of trade and tourism. It should really open up the Lothians and Borders to many more visitors, something which is vitally important to a strong economic future for all of us.
“Investment in the road on the Scottish side of the border is therefore more important than ever now.”
