SIR Robert McAlpine is forging ahead with the building that sees an American architect face up to Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The contractor is working on the first phase of the £50m campus redevelopment at Glasgow’s School of Art. The building, featuring an opaque glass facade, will sit opposite Mackintosh’s landmark.
The new buildings have been designed by New York architect Steven Holl which is working with Edinburgh practice JM Architects.
A five-storey building will replace a number of premises on Renfrew Street. Two of three buildings on the site will be demolished, while the C-listed third will be integrated into the new structure.
