Plans to expand Scottish Event Campus secure £6 million in funding

THE UK Government has confirmed it will commit £6 million in funding to support the first phase of the Scottish Event Campus’ (SEC) Destination SEC expansion plan.

Comprising the OVO Hydro, SEC Armadillo, and the SEC Centre, the 64-acre riverside campus is a regional and national events space in Glasgow.

Phase one will see the redevelopment of the car park situated in front of the OVO Hydro to deliver an east plaza and activation zone – at a similar size to George Square – to provide a new outdoor events space.

The UK Government’s support was announced by chancellor of the exchequer, John Healey MP, whilst setting out the Autumn budget.

Dom McKay, CEO of the SEC, said, “This is extremely welcome news and a further endorsement from the UK Government of the vital role the SEC plays in underpinning Glasgow’s and Scotland’s position as a global events and conference destination. Today, the SEC generates more than £605 million in economic value, welcomes 2.5 million visitors annually and supports 5,300 jobs.

“This welcome support along with our wider campus development plans will allow us to not only significantly enhance our economic and social contribution but also secure the SEC’s and Scotland’s position as a leading international venue for live entertainment, conferences, and exhibitions for decades to come.

“The UK Government’s £6 million funding will help deliver the first phase of our plans to develop our campus for the next generation.”

Councillor Ricky Bell, leader of Glasgow City Council, added, “The Scottish Event Campus is already a real asset to Glasgow and hugely important to the city’s ability to successfully host major events – which we saw again this summer, when it played an absolutely key role in the delivery of a great Commonwealth Games.

“But we all know that we face increasing competition from other cities across the globe, that are now investing in their venues. To stay ahead, Glasgow needs to be on the front foot and build on what it already has.

“This investment has the potential to really kick-start the wider development of the campus – and I’m delighted to see the Chancellor back the hard work and that vision the team at the SEC has.”
