Murals unveiled at Glasgow Central buildings

NETWORK Rail has unveiled four new murals at Glasgow Central that celebrate Glasgow in a project aimed at enhancing everyday spaces.

Created by Alloa artist Michael Corr, the graffiti-style artwork has been spray painted across four buildings on Salkeld Street and features some of Glasgow’s most recognisable landmarks.

Alongside the words ‘Glasgow Central’ and the station’s famous clock, the design includes a contemporary interpretation of the Glasgow Coat of Arms and the city’s iconic traffic cone. A flowing white line representing the River Clyde runs through the artwork, visually linking the four buildings.

Network Rail explained that, rather than simply restoring the buildings, the project has turned them into a striking piece of public art that brightens the area and celebrates Glasgow’s unique identity.

Artist Michael Corr said, “Glasgow is a city with a strong identity, rich history and a great sense of humour, so there was plenty of inspiration for the designs. It’s always rewarding to create artwork that becomes part of the everyday landscape and can be enjoyed by thousands of people as they travel into the city.

“It’s amazing that Network Rail has chosen to support a creative project like this. Instead of simply repainting the buildings, they’ve created an opportunity to celebrate the city and transform these spaces into something people can enjoy. I’m delighted to have been involved.”

PJ Trainer, project manager at Network Rail Scotland, added, “These buildings are one of the first things many passengers see as they approach Glasgow Central, so we wanted to make the most of that opportunity. Rather than leaving them as a blank canvas, we felt it was important to create something that reflects the city’s character and gives people a positive welcome as they arrive in Glasgow.”
