GROWTH capital investor BGF has completed a multi-million-pound investment in engineering consultancy Harley Haddow.

Harley Haddow specialises in mechanical and electrical engineering, geotechnical, civil and structural engineering, fire engineering, and building performance and sustainability.

More than 80% of the company’s live projects have a decarbonisation or net zero focus, reflecting rising demand for specialist expertise in improving building performance and reducing carbon emissions. The firm’s cultural and heritage projects include SWG3 in Glasgow and ongoing involvement in the renovation of the iconic glasshouses at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

BGF’s investment is designed to support the management team to accelerate Harley Haddow’s growth through continued organic expansion and selective acquisitions. As part of the next phase of the business’s development, Marc McLuskey, currently a director at Harley Haddow, will become CEO.

Through BGF’s Talent Network, Charles Layfield will join the business as non-executive chair, bringing significant experience in scaling professional services businesses, having executed more than 30 acquisitions during his career.

Marc McLuskey, CEO of Harley Haddow, said, “Harley Haddow has built a strong reputation over 75 years by combining deep technical expertise with a highly personal approach to clients. We are now a UK-wide consultancy employing nearly 200 people, with a strong platform from which to continue expanding our geographic reach and service offering.

“BGF’s minority investment model will allow us to accelerate our growth ambitions while ensuring Harley Haddow remains independently managed, with our existing leadership team, culture and values firmly in place. BGF’s experience in the built environment sector, collaborative approach and alignment with our ambitions made them the right partner to support the next stage of our journey.”

The investment builds on BGF’s experience supporting growth businesses across engineering and the wider built environment, including successful exits from Hydrock and BB7.

John Devine, investor at BGF, added, “Harley Haddow combines 75 years of engineering expertise with the ambition and momentum of a high-growth business. The team has built a strong national platform whilst maintaining the culture, technical quality and client relationships that differentiate the business. With a strong management team, an established reputation and clear opportunities for organic and acquisitive growth, Harley Haddow is well positioned for its next phase of expansion. We’re delighted to be supporting Marc, the directors and the wider team as they continue this journey.”
