A 43-home affordable housing development has been unveiled in Govan.
Elderpark Housing tenants have started to move into the apartments on Nimmo Drive – situated over two large buildings – which complement the existing sandstone tenement landscape.
The total cost of the project is £11.2 million, with £8.9 million funded by Glasgow City Council through a housing association grant. The remaining £2.3 million came from Elderpark Housing.
The JR Group completed construction of the properties on the site of a former ventilation factory and Elderpark’s community centre, which had reached the end of its useful life.
The homes comprise a mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom flats. They include lift access, sustainable heating, sprinkler systems, amenity space, and internal and external bike storage.
Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark Housing, said, “Nimmo Drive is an important development in terms of delivering further essential affordable housing to rent within the Govan community. The properties provide new homes within a former space which had industrial use and an outdated community centre so to make best use of this land for new homes is extremely pleasing.”
Glasgow City Council depute leader and Govan councillor Ricky Bell cut the ribbon on the doorstep of one of the properties to mark the official launch.
He said, “It was great to be able to cut the ribbon on these much-needed affordable homes in the middle of Govan that show the council’s determination to keep delivering new homes in our communities – and especially the range of one to four bedroom properties that will provide the good mix that we need in the area. They already fit into the streetscape very nicely, and will hopefully be around for as long as the famous tenements beside them.”
Gary McGregor, MD at The JR Group, added, “From the outset, this project has been about much more than constructing new homes. It has been about being part of the wider regeneration of the area and transforming a previously underused site and creating a high-quality development that will have a lasting positive impact on the Govan community.”
