ELGIN’S STEM Starts Discovery Centre is to open its doors for three free sessions over the summer, following a ‘clear desire’ from families across Moray for additional sessions.
The facility at Elgin Library. was first opened in February of this year, with Robertson Construction Northern delivering it on behalf of Moray Council project to create the facility.
Part of the Moray Growth Deal’s £4.8 million Early Years STEM project, it is a long-term investment in early years STEM education – with the aim to inspire young people, build confidence, and support skills development.
Since opening earlier this year, the centre has welcomed 790 adults and 1,900 children from across Moray, through a combination of school visits, early learning sessions, and limited public visits.
Previous sessions at the facility have demonstrated a growing demand for increased public access to the centre. Pilot taster sessions have been regularly oversubscribed, with families keen for greater availability, the council said.
Public sessions in the coming weeks are free of charge and will operate across nine days over a three-week period with four sessions per day. This will provide a total of 36 sessions for over 1,800 children aged 3-8 and adults. The dates for the July sessions are, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30.
Chair of Moray Council’s education, children’s, and leisure services committee, councillor Kathleen Robertson, said, “This next series of taster sessions is an important phase in the development of the STEM Starts Discovery Centre as we explore opportunities to expand our offering, enabling more families to benefit from this unique, high-quality, hands-on STEM experience.
“Widening access allows the programme to continue to support its core mission of
providing meaningful and engaging learning opportunities that inspire the next generation and strengthen future pathways into STEM.”
Tickets for the free session will become available at 6pm on July 8 here.
