Scotland’s biggest livestock auction centre set for major revamp

AMN Group

PLANS have been unveiled for the upgrade of one of Europe’s largest livestock auction facilities in Inverurie.

AMN Group will lead a phased programme of improvements across its Thainstone Centre, with work already underway on the upgrade and modernisation of livestock handling facilities.

The plans come following three years of detailed research, feasibility studies, and ‘extensive’ engagement with members, customers, and centre users – with it aimed to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer experience, and secure the long-term future of the site.

Launched in 2023, the vision explored how Thainstone could evolve to meet the future needs of the co-operative, either through redevelopment and repurposing of the existing site or the creation of a new purpose-built auction centre.

Independent research was undertaken by SAOS and, together with the feedback gathered throughout the engagement process, confirmed ‘strong support’ for continued investment in Thainstone’s future.

The findings highlighted opportunities to improve existing facilities, increase efficiency and strengthen the centre’s role within the regional economy, while reinforcing the view that building on Thainstone existing strengths, making better use of its facilities and continuing to invest for future generations represented the right long-term direction for the group.

Commenting on recent progress, ANM Group CEO Grant Rogerson, said, “Since opening in 1990, Thainstone has facilitated the sale of more than £5 billion worth of goods, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Our responsibility is to ensure it continues to serve members, customers and communities for decades to come. This Vision is about building on what Thainstone already does well while investing in facilities that will ensure it remains fit for the future.

“From the outset, we were committed to exploring every option carefully and listening to the views of our members, customers and centre users. Independent research, detailed feasibility work and the feedback we received throughout that process all pointed in the same direction.

“The message we heard was remarkably consistent: build on Thainstone’s existing strengths, make better use of our existing facilities and continue investing in Thainstone’s future. That feedback has reinforced our belief that we are taking the right long-term approach for our members, our customers and the wider rural economy.

“The Vision is not a single project that will be completed within a defined timescale. It is a long-term, multi-faceted programme that will be delivered in carefully considered phases, with each stage remaining true to our core values while delivering tangible benefits for our members.”

The Thainstone Vision is now on display within Thainstone Centre and available online, with ANM Group representatives also discussing the plans throughout this summer’s agricultural show season.
