Transformer deliveries due for SSEN’s Lochay substation upgrade

SSEN Transmission is to deliver two new electricity transformers through Killin next week as part of an ongoing project to maintain and upgrade the local transmission network.

The deliveries are scheduled to take place on May 12 and 13 and mark a key milestone in the Lochay transformer replacement project at the substation located next to Lochay Power Station.

SSEN Transmission explained that the project will help to ensure that the substation can continue to deliver a safe and reliable electricity supply in the area and support the continued movement of renewable power across Scotland and beyond.

The transformers will travel through Killin, crossing Dochart Bridge before leaving the A827 and heading up the glen to the substation site. Due to their size and weight, the vehicles are not classed as abnormal loads and will be escorted by specialist haulier JB Rawcliffe, operating under an agreed traffic management plan.

SSEN Transmission explained it has worked closely with partners to plan the movements carefully, with temporary traffic controls used where required to keep people safe and minimise disruption. Traffic will be allowed to pass once it is safe to do so.

Louise Anderson, lead community liaison manager at SSEN Transmission, said, “We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by residents and businesses in Killin as we work to deliver this critical upgrade at the Lochay substation. We’ve worked hard to plan these deliveries carefully, manage traffic safely and keep impacts to a minimum, and we’re grateful to the community for their cooperation as we reach this important milestone.”
