RENEWABLES specialist RWE has announced the completion and commissioning of its Camster II Onshore Wind Farm in Caithness.

The 36MW project was first consented in July 2021 and construction started in 2023. It first generated electricity in March 2026 and is now fully operational with the capacity to power the equivalent of around 51,000 typical homes.

Sopna Sury, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said, “By completing Camster II we’ve once again demonstrated RWE’s expertise in delivering onshore wind farms, while creating meaningful value for local communities and economies. Each turbine that’s turning is a visible sign of RWE’s continued progress in onshore renewables and is a tremendous success for our teams on site, for the communities in Caithness and for Scotland’s energy transition.”

Camster II is RWE’s fourth operational wind farm in Caithness. Principal contractor Farrans supported over 50 roles during the construction works and welcomed two early careers civil engineering students and an apprentice. The contractor also appointed 54% of all its subcontractors from within 20 miles of the site, including Gow Earthworks, GMR Hendersons and John Gunn and Sons, and representing 56% of the total subcontract spend.

Patrick Murray, regional director for Farrans, said, “We are delighted to see Camster II now supplying homes and contributing to our national renewable energy targets. Our extensive portfolio in delivering onshore wind farms and our long history of operations in Scotland meant that we were well placed to be the main contractor for RWE, a client we have developed an excellent longstanding relationship with.”

Camster II is delivering further environmental benefits. During construction, the trial of an experimental peat reinstatement method — reusing peat from turbine foundations for forestry reinstatement — earned recognition from Nature Scot and environmental groups. A core path to the east of the site was also resurfaced, while a new equestrian gate was installed to improve access for recreational horse riders.

Camster II consists of 10 turbines and is one of four new RWE onshore wind farms in Scotland under construction and the first to be completed and commissioned.
