CK Contracts has created 10 full-time jobs through its inaugural skills academy in North Ayrshire – tackling local unemployment while addressing skills shortages in the rail and civil engineering sectors.
The skills initiative rolled out by the Ayrshire-based firm, was delivered in partnership with North Ayrshire Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) with the training being facilitated by QTS Training.
The first CK Contracts Skills Academy combined classroom-based learning with hands-on site experience to equip participants with the practical skills required for long-term careers. More than 70 people applied for the programme, with 12 candidates selected to take part in the intensive 10-week course. Of those, 10 successfully completed the academy and have now secured permanent roles in civil engineering within the rail sector.
The local cohort – who were actively seeking work – will contribute to projects delivered through the North Ayrshire Council framework, supporting vital local infrastructure.
Launched in January 2026, the academy was inspired by the success of previous rail training initiatives and tailored specifically to meet local workforce needs. Participants undertook a wide range of accredited rail and construction courses, gaining essential competencies in areas such as health and safety, track safety and site operations, alongside broader employability skills.
The programme was designed not only to address skills shortages in the industry, but also to create sustainable career pathways for local people.
Kris Kinnear, MD at CK Contracts, said, “We pride ourselves in creating sustainable employment opportunities for local people and those interested in building a career in the rail industry – this academy represents a significant step in that commitment.
“It’s vital that we continue to introduce and support new talent into the sector, and this programme has given participants the skills, experience and confidence to get a strong start.”
“This is just the beginning for the CK Skills Academy – we are committed to continuing the programme and investing in both our local community and the future workforce.”
Lorna Gibson, training director at QTS Training, added, “We were delighted to work with CK Contracts to deliver their first Skills Academy. Having previously collaborated on successful rail training programmes, it’s fantastic to see this initiative create real opportunities for North Ayrshire residents.
“This model shows how effective partnership working can open doors for people and support industry growth.”
Laura Neill, of North Ayrshire Council, commented, “Supporting local contractors and creating opportunities for local people is incredibly important. The Skills Academy has provided participants with the right support, training and pathways into meaningful employment.
“Twelve full-time jobs for North Ayrshire locals is an incredible achievement. We’re excited to see how the candidates and skills academy progresses.”
Campbell Braid, operations director at Siemens Mobility, said, “CK Contracts have been a trusted supply chain partner of ours for well over a decade now. It is great to see the rust and faith we have in them being translated into sustainable jobs for tomorrow’s generation of talent.”
