A planning application to bring a new retail hub to the site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks has been approved.
Located south of Marston’s Inn at the junction of New Craig Road and Prospecthill Road, the development will deliver six commercial units, including an anchor convenience store, two drive-thru outlets, and electric vehicle charging points.
Ravenscraig is one of Europe’s largest brownfield regeneration and community creation projects, with a vision to establish a self-sufficient community offering housing, education, transport links, and employment opportunities. To date, more than 1,000 homes have been delivered, alongside education contributions of £4.7 million to North Lanarkshire Council.
The latest approval adds to a series of developments at Ravenscraig. A £3.9 billion data centre campus, set to be one of the largest in the UK, has recently been proposed by renewable energy developer Apatura, which would bring 2,400 jobs to the area. In addition, Motus Commercials and Fusion Assets continue to develop their projects within Ravenscraig’s dedicated employment zone after securing planning in 2024.
Russell Wilkie, director at Ravenscraig Limited, said, “In recent months we’ve made significant progress towards delivering our overall masterplan for Ravenscraig, attracting new businesses to the site and securing high-quality employment opportunities that will benefit the area for years to come. This investment is the next step in delivering a self-sufficient community with even more to follow.
“This latest proposal enables a fantastic retail and leisure offering to be developed for the community, something we know local people have been eager to see. We’re excited to welcome a range of well-known brands that residents and visitors alike can enjoy in the coming years.”
