MUIR Construction recently welcomed BE-ST (Built Environment – Smarter Transformation) to the site of its retrofit of the former Younger Building in Edinburgh for a discussion that focused on the evolving landscape of low-carbon construction and the increasing expectations from clients around sustainable delivery.
The discussion took place during Muir’s quarterly senior management meeting. It provided an opportunity for Muir’s leadership team to exchange insights on emerging standards, retrofit innovation, and the role of contractors and supply chains in supporting the transition to a lower-carbon built environment.
Muir Construction is currently delivering a major refurbishment of the Younger Building for Scarborough Group. The six-storey building is being transformed into flexible office accommodation and will relaunch as Base West Edinburgh.
Sustainability is a key driver behind the project, with the building moving towards a fully electric operation and targeting an EPC A rating. Upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, LED lighting, improved air quality, and intelligent building controls are designed to support improved building performance and create a healthier and more efficient workspace.
Gavin Johnston, associate director – collaborative and commercial partnerships at BE-ST, said, “It was a pleasure to support a progressive organisation like Muir Construction as it continues to respond to the challenge of delivering higher energy efficiency in buildings. It was particularly valuable to share how BE-ST can support that journey not only through knowledge exchange and industry collaboration, but also through practical skills development via our Low Carbon Passport programme, designed and delivered with industry and CITB.”
David Fairweather, business development director at Muir Construction, added, “It was great to welcome Gavin from BE-ST to the Younger Building project and have the opportunity to discuss how low-carbon delivery continues to evolve across the industry. Sessions like this provide valuable insight into emerging standards and client expectations, and we look forward to continuing to engage with BE-ST as we deliver sustainable retrofit projects, alongside new build developments, in line with the evolving standards shaping the built environment.”
