A Moray distillery is to install a heat recovery system to cut carbon and costs amidst increasing energy prices.

Benromach Distillery in Forres is one of two distilleries owned by family firm, Gordon & MacPhail. The company has secured up to £62,500 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) towards the cost of buying and installing a heat recovery system. This will capture heat from its distillation process and re-use it to pre-heat the next batch.

Senior development manager with HIE in Moray Steve Richards, said, “Ben Romach is important as a local employer and part of the significant Moray whisky industry. This latest initiative will further improve the environmental credentials of the distillery building while saving energy costs. I’m pleased we’ve been able to provide support and look forward to continuing to work with the company as the project develops.”

Head of manufacturing for Gordon and MacPhail, Mhairi Winters, added, “We are extremely grateful to HIE helping us implement this project, which, in addition to lowering our gas usage on site and reducing carbon emissions, has also improved safety on site by lowering the temperature of our co-product being loaded into tanker.”
