LOCAL people are benefiting from 336 employment opportunities through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, it has been revealed.
Figures show that city deal contractors have committed to creating 86 apprenticeship positions and 250 new entrant positions – of these, 84 apprenticeships and 232 new entrant positions have already been completed or are underway.
Councillor Susan Aitken, chair of the Glasgow City Region cabinet and leader of Glasgow City Council, said, “These are really encouraging figures and get to the heart of what so much of the Glasgow City Deal is about – creating real opportunities for our citizens while transforming our places and our economy.
“The City Region needs the people and the skills to take our economy forward. And by supporting local young people into apprenticeships and employment, we’re doing just that.
“It’s great to see employers creating pathways into work and recognising the importance of our young people in delivering a productive and prosperous city region.”
In addition, more than 350 work experience placements and tasters have taken place or are underway, and more than 195 people have been supported to gain a vocational training qualification.
The city deal is also continuing to benefit local businesses through contract opportunities. More than half of tier one city deal contract have been awarded to local, Glasgow City Region-based companies – with a combined value of £175 million, £54.5 million of which has been awarded to SMEs in the region.
Building on this commitment to community benefits, the region’s new community benefits hub portal is also helping to bring community groups and businesses together, helping suppliers to find and deliver wishes for local communities.
Since its launch in September 2024, businesses on the community benefits hub have committed to delivering, or have already delivered, more than 130 community requests, worth £150,000 and 860 hours of volunteer time.
