Process to remove collapsed sections of Spey Viaduct progresses

Moray Council

MORAY Council has submitted an application for listed building consent ahead of the removal of two failed sections of the collapsed Spey Viaduct.

Built between 1883-86, the historic crossing collapsed into the River Spey in December 2025. Initial inspections concluded that it was likely caused by scour, with the bridge remaining closed.

The application is focussed on dismantling the failed sections into smaller sections – allowing for a more controlled and safe removal process than could be achieved if the spans were to be removed in one piece.

The detailed methodology will be agreed once a contractor is appointed and able to carry out further assessment, the council said.  Submitting the application now, based on the most likely removal process, helps speed up progress and avoid unnecessary delay but could be subject to change once the specific methodology is advised, it added.
