GREAT British Energy (GBE) is to be headquartered in Aberdeen at Marischal Square, the city’s council has announced.
The publicly-owned energy company, launched by the UK Government, will occupy more than 8,400ft of office space in the grade A building.
Marischal Square comprises 122,000 sq ft over six floors and has one of the best BREEAM and EPC ratings of any office building in Aberdeen with sustainability features and technology embedded throughout.
Aberdeen City Council City co-leader, councillor Ian Yuill, said, “Aberdeen is at the forefront of the transition in the energy sector while ensuring the security of the existing oil and gas chain.
“We welcome Great British Energy to the city as part of this essential work to the economy which is vital not only for the securing the expertise locally but good for the future energy needs of the country.”
The building will be leased and managed by the Government Property Agency (GPA) which is responsible for the majority of the government office estate.
The new HQ will host GBE’s main corporate functions, supply chain activities, and major development projects – including ambitions in deep-water offshore wind. It is currently working closely with partners to attract top talent and ensure its presence supports investment and job creation in the region. Recruitment is ongoing and a broader drive will launch this year.
GBE aims to power Britain with clean, secure, home-grown energy, and to become a global leader in clean energy by investing in renewables, boosting energy security, and creating good jobs.
The organisation will invest in, develop, build and operate the technology the UK needs to increase its energy independence, and give communities a direct stake in the clean energy revolution and transition.
GBE CEO Dan McGrail commented, “Aberdeen is the perfect location for Britain’s publicly owned energy company. It is a world-leading energy hub and has been crucial to our energy security for decades and I am delighted Marischal Square will be the location of our permanent headquarters.
“Thousands of engineers, innovators, and technicians call Aberdeen home. That is why we are proud to make this city our home and become a part of the Aberdeen community. Great British Energy will draw on the abundant local talent to provide investment and support for projects across the country.”
