NETWORK Rail is to begin work on £200,000 worth of essential repairs to the footbridge at Burnside Railway Station.
The organisation said the footbridge is a ‘vital link’ and restoring the stair access will improve everyday connectivity for the local community.
Work will begin to reinstate stepped access on the west side of the station, which has been closed since March 2025. The repair work only applies to the staircase linking the footbridge to the platform, which will remain closed for the duration of the project. All other parts of the crossing will remain open and accessible throughout the work.
Jointly funded by Network Rail and South Lanarkshire Council, the project will see engineers replace worn stair treads, repaint the staircases and repair the landing area to make the structure safe for use again. Work is scheduled to start on 4 March and will run until 29 March.
Richard Kinsella, regional asset manager at Network Rail, said, “These repairs will provide a safer, more dependable route for everyone using the station. We’re working closely with South Lanarkshire Council to complete the work as efficiently as possible.”
Councillor Joe Fagan, leader of South Lanarkshire Council, added, “We know that this staircase being closed to the public has been incredibly disruptive to many local people, but obviously the safety of its users is paramount. I am therefore delighted that, through our partnership working with Network Rail, work will be starting so soon and that everyone who uses the station will have the footbridge open and available to them in a matter of weeks.”
