Bespoke scaffolding solutions assist iconic church renovation in Renfrewshire

Church with scaffolding around it

JR Scaffold Services has supported a renovation project of the oldest church in the Diocese of Paisley, St Fillan’s Church in Houston.

The firm installed custom-designed scaffolding at the landmark building, to allow its client access to the roof. This enabled the restoration team to remove and replace the existing slating, helping to prevent the restoration project from halting due to adverse weather conditions.

The installation took two working weeks to erect, with the support of contracts director John Jack and in-house temporary roof advisor Owen Stoney, who led the project alongside three scaffolders.

The solution was designed by Gallery Access Solutions, utilising a mixture of Cuplok scaffolding and Uni Roof by Altrad Dessa, which allowed the team to erect the structure at roof level rather than within the limited ground space surrounding the church.

Originally built in 1841, the church building is located close to the main road. JR worked closely with designers to ensure all scaffolding met road and pavement regulations, while additional beam work was incorporated to accommodate the restricted space at the rear of the church.

Owen Stoney said, “This was an exciting and complex project to be involved with, as it allowed us to showcase our adaptability and expertise for our client, ensuring that the required scaffolding was erected around the old, iconic building.”
