A major milestone has been met in Mid-Lin DayCare‘s plans to build a new centre in Dundee to enhance the charitable service it delivers in the city.
The news comes after Dundee City Council approved the community asset transfer application of its current building at Pitkerro Drive.
By taking full ownership of the building from the local authority, it opens up funding avenues for what will be a multi-million pound project for the charity.
ajfitchet | architect has developed plans which allow for the original building to be completely demolished and a new purpose-built facility constructed on the cleared site. The new facility will increase the floor area from 320m2 to 650m2, and include many more opportunities to invite the community in to the building for a variety of uses, while maintaining and enhancing the daycare provision.
Included in the design will be an enclosed garden for the DayCare users to enjoy, dedicated activities and dining rooms, a Changing Places toilet, a lift, and flexible community spaces on the first floor.
Solar panels will take advantage of the south facing roof aspect to reduce energy costs, while brick and metal cladding will create a clean, modern appearance, visually setting it apart from the existing white building on the site.

Early indications are, that ensuring the new building respects its surrounding context, there should be little resistance, however, this will only be determined once formal discussions take place and the final appearance is still subject to change. In any case, the final appearance will be a significant improvement and more welcoming than the current facility.
