Statom Group North secures groundworks and RC structures package at HMP Glasgow

STATOM Group North has been appointed by Kier to deliver a groundworks and RC structures package for the central facilities building, the front of house building, and several other ancillary buildings as part of the new HMP Glasgow prison development.

The contract supports the £683.8 million programme to replace HMP Barlinnie with a modern, sustainable custodial facility.

Key components of Statom Group North’s work will include: groundworks and RC structures; underslab and external drainage; underslab gas and waterproofing installation; superstructure walls, cores and slabs; precast stairs and structures; and coordination with other subcontractors working on piling, precast elements, structural steel and externals.

The firm is based in Bellshill, just seven miles from the site, and revealed it has been able to place local companies and people at the heart of the project. From management to workforce, all the labour is from the local area, while externally hired plant will also be local and the vast majority of materials will come from nearby companies. Statom expects in excess of 70% of its total spend to be in the local area.

“Statom North is proud to be contributing our groundworks and concrete frame expertise to this transformative project for Glasgow,” said Kevin Graham, MD at Statom North. “We look forward to working hand in hand with Kier and the Scottish Prison Service to deliver a project that is safe, sustainable and delivers long-term value for the community.”
