SSEN Transmission has been announced as one of the principal sponsors of this year’s Mock COP30 event taking place in Inverness.

The youth-led climate conference mirrors the global COP process and looks to empower young people to engage with climate policy and action.

The sponsorship reflects SSEN Transmission’s ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of climate leaders and encourage conversations around Scotland’s clean energy future.

The event will bring together students from across the Highlands to engage in climate debates, propose innovative solutions, and simulate the decision-making processes of the United Nations Climate Change Conference. Held to coincide with COP30 in Belém, Brazil (10–21 November 2025), the Mock COP provides a timely platform for young voices to contribute to global climate conversations from a Scottish perspective.

Around 90 pupils from 12 schools are confirmed to be taking part in this year’s event, which will be held at the Highland Council Chambers in Inverness on November 10.

Now in its fifth year, the event is organised by The Open University (OU) in Scotland, Developing the Young Workforce Inverness & Central Highlands (DYWICH), and Highland Council.

SSEN Transmission will also form part of the panel session for pupils during the event, helping to encourage participants to consider different perspectives during the debate and prompting further discussion.

In addition, SSEN Transmission’s sponsorship will help provide resources to schools who are unable to attend the event to put on their own Mock-COP debates, allowing even more schools to get involved in climate conversations.

Nicky Gadsden, early careers manager at SSEN Transmission, said, “We’re proud to support this year’s Mock COP in Inverness and help create a platform where young people can engage with the climate challenges facing their communities and the world.

“These future leaders will be instrumental in shaping the energy transition here in the north of Scotland, and we’re delighted to help play a role in amplifying their voices and ideas.”

Gemma Burnside, partnership manager at The Open University in Scotland and lead organiser of Mock COP, added, “We’re thrilled to have SSEN Transmission join us this year. Their support not only helps deliver an inspiring event in Inverness but also extends the reach of Mock COP to classrooms across Scotland. Over the years, we’ve seen students grow in confidence, change their career paths, and discover their potential as changemakers. The energy, empathy and ideas they bring are exactly what Scotland, and the planet, needs.”
