THE JR Group has started work on a new housing development in Whitehill, Hamilton, which will see the delivery of 24 council homes on the former St. Paul’s Church site.
The project will provide 12 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom flats, purposely designed to meet a variety of housing needs in the area. The properties will include features suitable for older residents and individuals with mobility challenges, alongside homes for general needs tenants.
The Backmuir Road scheme is being developed on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council and supported by the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme.
Andrew Dallas, projects director for The JR Group, said, “The development at Backmuir Road is a vital step forward in delivering high quality affordable social homes on a brownfield site in South Lanarkshire. We appreciate the region, like the rest of the country is facing a real housing crisis, and developments like this offer much needed housing and strong community investment.
“We are delighted to work with South Lanarkshire Council to deliver this development on their behalf and look forward to the successful completion of these new homes for those who need them.”
Representatives from The JR Group joined councillor Davie McLachlan, chair of the council’s housing and technical resources committee, and council officials to mark the start of construction. Councillor McLachlan said, “I’m delighted that we are continuing to make progress in improving the availability of high-quality social housing across South Lanarkshire. When complete, these flats will be a welcome addition to the council’s housing stock in this area.
“The important thing is that we are making a difference by providing more affordable social housing, of a variety that meets the needs of local people while maintaining affordability and value for money.”
Construction is expected to take around 16 months, with the new homes anticipated to be completed in early 2027.
