Hub South East projects scoop trio of Learning Places Awards

THREE projects delivered by Hub South East have scooped gongs at the Learning Places Awards 2025.

Easthouses Primary, East Calder Primary, and Beatlie School Campus were recognised at the event, following the eighth Learning Places Scotland Conference.

Delivered on behalf of West Lothian Council by Hub South East, with Morrison Construction the main contractor and design by NORR, Beatlie School Campus won in the newly launched Creating Space for Outdoor Learning and Play category.

The school is an ASN provision for people aged 3-18 with severe and complex needs and its outdoor space is instrumental in assisting learning, wellbeing and inclusivity.

The same team also delivered the new East Calder Primary School which took home the  Project of the Year accolade. The school, with its unique triangular design aims to create a high-quality stimulating learning environment to support a modern teaching pedagogy. It was designed to be complimented by extremely low-energy performance levels equivalent to Passivhaus standards. This project also jointly shared the Inspiring Learning Spaces with Easthouses Primary.

Easthouses Primary was delivered for Midlothian Council by Hub South East, with Morrison Construction the main contractor and design by jmarchitects. The project includes a new primary school (not replacing another school), as well as early years and ASN provision.

Paul McGirk, Hub South East’s chief executive, said, “We’re delighted with the recognition for East Calder Primary, Easthouses Primary and Beatlie School Campus. Each demonstrates true partnership working, innovative design, quality construction and ultimately positive outcomes for young people. Our thanks and congratulations go to all parties involved in these fantastic projects.

“Hub South East has a proven track record of success in the education sector and we are proud to have been entrusted with the delivery of more than £600m of projects for our public sector clients, with more than £240m currently under construction or in development. Our commitment to ensuring that new community infrastructure is aligned with our clients’ aspirations around net zero, place and local wealth creation, has led to positive partnerships and we look forward to further developing these on future projects.”

West Lothian Council’s executive councillor for education, Andrew McGuire, added, “It’s fantastic to see both East Calder Primary and Beatlie Campus among the winners at the Learning Place Scotland Awards for 2025. We aim to invest wisely to improve the learning experience for local children and young people, to give them the best possible platform for education.

“Thanks to all our partners who have worked with us to deliver such innovative schools, including Hub South East, Morrison Construction and Norr Architects.”

Midlothian Council’s cabinet member for education, councillor Ellen Scott, added, “We are absolutely thrilled that Easthouses Primary School has won the Inspiring Learning Spaces Award. This achievement is a fantastic recognition of the creativity and collaboration that went into delivering such an exceptional learning environment.

“Opened in August 2024, Easthouses Primary is already making a real difference for pupils and the wider community, and this award celebrates the vision and hard work of everyone involved — from our Midlothian Council team to Hub South East, Morrison Construction, and jmarchitects. Congratulations to all.”
