SOUTH Ayrshire Council’s Prestwick Leisure Club has reopened following a £3.6 million refurbishment carried out by Robertson Construction Central West.

The upgrade was supported by a SALIX grant, a government-backed programme that helps public sector organisations cut carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.

The funding enabled a range of energy-saving measures to be introduced, while improvements were also made to the changing rooms, entrance foyer, and swimming pool.

The refurbishment included new wall and roof cladding, an air handling system to improve air quality, and a Building Energy Management System for smarter control of heating and ventilation. Solar panels on the roof further enhance sustainability.

Changing facilities have been updated with an additional 16 private cubicles and dedicated family and baby changing rooms. The 25-metre pool has undergone remedial work to tiles, grout, and the pool surround, and a new cover has been fitted to reduce overnight heat loss, evaporation, and humidity.

A redesigned entrance foyer and reception provide a brighter arrival for visitors and a ‘modern, comfortable’ working environment for staff.

Andy McLinden, regional MD, Robertson Construction Central West, said, “Working closely with the council and users, we have transformed the centre to enhance both visitor experience and sustainability. From running the site on 100% renewable energy and using low-emission HVO fuel to reusing materials and diverting all waste from landfill, our construction practices mirrored the green upgrades delivered. It’s been a pleasure to support South Ayrshire Council and the local community as the trusted delivery partner for this high-quality project.”

Jane Bradley, director of communities and transformation, South Ayrshire Council, added, “The needs of the local community are at the heart of our decision making and the upgrades carried out will benefit everyone using the facility. Not only will the improvements help to support customers to maximise their health and wellbeing, they will also help us to take another step towards our targets to reduce our carbon footprint.”

During the closure, fitness members were able to use the gym and pool at Citadel Leisure Centre in Ayr, which is also undergoing refurbishment by Robertson Construction Central West.
