EDINBURGH-based Ossian Architects has announced that Ewan Hooper and Grigor Brown have been promoted to associates, in recognition of their contributions to the practice’s work and studio.

Ewan joined Ossian in 2023 and Grigor in early 2025, though their collaboration goes back much further. The pair studied together at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, and Ossian said they have since developed a shared approach to ‘thoughtful, context-driven design’. Sustainability is described as a common thread in their approach, with an emphasis on fabric upgrades, regionally sourced low-impact materials, and collaboration with local craftspeople and trades.

Ewan brings experience from other practices, where he worked on complex urban and heritage sites. Ossian explained that his work combines understanding of technical and contextual challenges with a growing portfolio of rural projects, where material, craft and detail play a central role. He is particularly interested in how architecture can respond to place, drawing on local histories, natural materials, and construction traditions to create buildings that feel ‘rooted and enduring’.

Grigor has worked across differing scales and typologies throughout his career, from large residential developments to light-touch adaptive reuse. His work ranges from retrofits, where original features are retained and celebrated, to new-build projects shaped by vernacular forms and landscape. Grigor values collaboration with local makers and has a keen interest in composition, material, and detail.

Martin Flett, director of Ossian Architects, said, “Ewan and Grigor have each brought a huge amount of creativity, energy and care to their work. Their promotion recognises their shared commitment to thoughtful, sustainable design and to the collaborative culture that defines our practice.”
