THE deep retrofit of Scotland’s National Retrofit Centre has been shortlisted for The Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) Awards in the Sustainability category.
The project, led by Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) and supported by the Scottish Government’s Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund, was developed in collaboration with John Gilbert Architects, Brown + Wallace, Luths Services, and Narro Associates. The main contractor was Clark Contracts.
Taking a fabric first approach, the retrofit focused on improving the thermal efficiency of the building fabric through increased insulation and airtightness measures within the building’s heated spaces and transitioning from a gas-based heating system to a ‘first-of-its-kind’ zero direct emissions system which integrated multiple systems and approaches, including hybrid heat pump systems, supported by solar PV and thermal array, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, as well as energy-efficient lighting and controls.
Gerry Cummins, director, Clark Contracts said, “We are delighted that this innovative project has been shortlisted at this year’s GIA Awards. Retrofit projects like this are vital as our industry works towards a more sustainable future, and it’s fantastic to see this important work being recognised.”
Gavin Johnston, associate director of collaborative and commercial partnerships at BE-ST, added, “We are proud that the dedication and collaborative effort of the team have been recognised through this shortlisting. This project is a true testament to what can be accomplished when collaboration is at the heart of innovation. Together we have delivered a complex retrofit, learned valuable lessons, and overcome challenges to create a space for the sector to gain essential retrofit training and skills.”
As part of the works, the existing curtain walling system was replaced with a new insulated Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) panel system, manufactured at BE-ST’s Mass Timber Centre of Excellence. This system is complemented by increased roof and floor insulation.
