NFRC Scotland has revealed details of its work in recent months to address the roofing industry’s growing skills crisis.
With the support of its members, the organisation has been promoting roofing skills and opportunities at a series of events across the country.
NFRC Scotland was commended for its role in the Edinburgh Traditional Building Festival through a Scottish Parliamentary motion. In a parliamentary debate, Gordon MacDonald MSP highlighted the National 5 qualification work, while Carol Mochan MSP referenced NFRC’s parliamentary reception in raising concerns about the lack of roofing training provision in south Scotland.
Earlier this month, Euan Stainbank MP attended the Lock 16 stakeholder engagement event, where he cut slate with Kyle Stoddart from Compass Roofing Ltd and discussed the skills shortage with Compass Roofing MD, Scott Miller.
Elsewhere, NFRC’s parliamentary reception and ongoing work was highlighted in The City of Edinburgh Council’s June 2025 supplier newsletter. And on 19 September, Foysol Choudhury MSP asked the Scottish Government about plans for a sustainable model to roll out National 5 Creative Industries courses in roof slating across Scotland.
NFRC Scotland and its contributing members were also mentioned in a submission for the COSLA Excellence Awards for their contributions to Build Your Future and the National 5 qualification work. Regional manager John McKinney has been invited to present to the judging panel.
Looking ahead, NFRC Scotland and its members will participate in a series of skills demonstrations and events, including: a skills demonstration at Leith Academy on October 6; involvement in Edinburgh Castle Heritage Careers Week on October 27; skills demonstrations by Compass Roofing at Bo’ness Academy and Old Plean Roofing at The Engine Shed, Stirling on October 28; a skills demonstration at St Augustine’s RC High School, Edinburgh on November 3-4; and a skills demonstration at Currie High School, Edinburgh on November 18.
Anticipation is also building for the Scottish Roofing Awards on October 24, celebrating excellence in roofing and contributions to skills development.
