Leisure development talent unite to address Edinburgh indoor cycling challenges

Craiglockhart Leisure and Tennis Centre in Edinburgh

ALLIANCE Leisure has brought a team of Scotland-based design and build specialists together to create an indoor cycling studio at Craiglockhart Leisure and Tennis Centre in Edinburgh.

The £246,000 project will transform the centre’s underused social area into a modern home for Edinburgh Leisure’s RPM indoor cycling programme.

Since reopening after the Covid-19 lockdown, Craiglockhart has been unable to deliver a full group cycling timetable due to inadequate air handling in the existing cycle studio. A temporary relocation to the sports hall is said to have allowed only limited daytime sessions to run, leaving evening demand unmet.

The new facility aims to address these issues by providing a dedicated, ventilated space for cycling classes.

Work on site is due to begin next week, with completion scheduled for early November. The centre will remain fully operational throughout the build.

Working through the UK Leisure Framework, managed by Denbighshire Leisure, Alliance Leisure will work with a team that includes lead contractor Thomas Johnstone Ltd, Wellwood Leslie Architects, M&E consultant Wallace Whittle, principal designer ABT Safety, and AV and lighting specialist Hutchi, to deliver the scheme.

Jo Cameron, business delivery manager, Alliance Leisure, said, “This project demonstrates the power of the UK Leisure Framework to harness regional design and build talent to fast-track essential improvements that will have an immediate impact on community access to physical activity. By creating a purpose-built cycle studio, we’re enabling Edinburgh Leisure to meet demand for its RPM programme and to offer a first-class experience that will inspire more people to get and stay active.”
