Contracts awarded on SP Energy Networks multi-billion-pound strategic framework

Overhead pylon works

BALFOUR Beatty has secured a place on SP Energy Networks’ multi-billion-pound strategic agreement for overhead line works framework.

The firm joins Morgan Sindall Construction, M Group Energy, Aureos Energy, Wood, Painhas S.A., Carluke-based PLPC Ltd, and Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios SA on the five-year framework.

The framework will see the replacement and installation of new 400kV, 275kV and 132kV overhead line conductor systems, which are used to carry electricity across long distances across central and southern Scotland. There is an option to extend the framework for a further five years.

SP Energy Networks said that the framework will support it in delivering the UK Government’s clean power 2030 mission, which aims to unlock more capacity for new homes, businesses, and clean energy projects, move power around the country more efficiently, and significantly reduce the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels, all whilst boosting energy security.

Tony Wilson, MD of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission and Distribution business, said, “We’re proud to be a part of this strategic framework, which recognises our proven expertise in delivering complex overhead line projects and our track record of successful delivery in Scotland.

“Through the framework, we will work closely and collaboratively with SP Energy Networks transmission business and our local supply chain partners to ensure a stable and resilient electricity supply across Central and Southern Scotland, whilst also leaving a lasting, positive legacy for local communities through our commitment to providing numerous local employment opportunities.”

Guy Jefferson, MD of transmission at SP Energy Networks, added, “We’re pleased to have Balfour Beatty and their expertise working alongside us as we lead the charge in helping deliver the UK Government’s clean power 2030 ambition.

“Our strategic partnerships give suppliers confidence to invest in their business – growing workforces across the country and creating even greater opportunities for the UK.”

Contracts, including defined scope and value of works, are expected to be awarded later this year and throughout the duration of the contract, Balfour Beatty said.
