BREWSTER Brothers is celebrating a major milestone after diverting over two million tonnes of construction waste from landfill.
The West Lothian-headquartered waste management specialist recycles construction waste into high-quality aggregate products. The firm removes metal, plastic, and organic matter and processes the rest of the waste by washing, screening, and separating it using a range of technologies.
The end result is a product that can be repurposed back into the construction industry where it is used in projects ranging from new-build homes to road infrastructure.
The recycled aggregates business was founded in 2017 in Livingston. A second site has now opened in Cumbernauld. The company processes and recycles up to 2,000 tonnes of waste a day between the two sites.
MD Scott Brewster said, “Reaching the milestone of recycling over two million tonnes of waste is a proud moment for our team and a testament to the power of a circular business model. From day one, our mission has been to transform construction waste into a valuable resource, reducing the industry’s reliance on virgin materials and lowering its carbon footprint.”
Brewster Brothers operates under the principles of a circular economy. This means it tries to minimise any waste created by redesigning processes and finding new ways to use any waste or by-products created during the recycling process.
Scott added, “The construction industry is one of the largest producers of waste, and embracing circularity is no longer optional – it’s essential. By recovering and repurposing materials that would otherwise go to landfill, we’re helping to build a more sustainable future. This milestone reinforces the vital role circular practices play in driving environmental progress while still delivering the high-quality products our customers expect.”
Angela Constance, MSP for the Almond Valley constituency where Brewster Brothers’ Pumpherston site is located, said, “I welcome the news that Brewster Brothers have recycled over two million tons of material between its sites at Pumpherston and Cumbernauld. This is a truly commendable achievement which will reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimise the environmental impact of building projects.
“The scale of this milestone is impressive and is a great example of how Brewster Brothers and West Lothian are leading the way in recycling and contributing to the circular economy with an ongoing commitment to help the Scottish construction industry to a more sustainable and zero-carbon future.
“This innovative approach not only helps reduce West Lothian’s carbon footprint but also sets an inspiring example of how businesses can contribute to a greener future.”
