BALFOUR Beatty has secured the contract to deliver initial works on SSEN Transmission‘s Netherton Hub project.
Appointed as the common interface contractor, Balfour Beatty will undertake all associated civil engineering and building works to construct the Spittal to Peterhead high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station which will form part of the Netherton Hub located near Peterhead.
In addition, Balfour Beatty is also delivering a 400 kV substation to support offshore and onshore electricity generation, and a 132 kV substation to enable future generation and storage connections from third-party developers as part of the multi-billion pound ASTI Onshore Framework.
On completion, the Netherton Hub will enable renewable energy generated in the north of Scotland to be converted to direct current and transmitted to demand centres throughout the UK. It comes as part of a wider upgrade of the transmission network in the north of Scotland through SSEN Transmission’s ‘pathway to 2030’ programme, essential to meeting the UK and Scottish governments’ renewable energy targets and securing a reliable supply of affordable, homegrown low-carbon power.

Main construction is expected to commence in early 2026 and at peak, Balfour Beatty said it will employ circa 800 people with at least 5% of its workforce being made up of apprentices and graduates as part of the company’s commitment to The 5% Club.
