MORRISON Construction has been awarded the £9 million Glasgow City Council contract to take forward the next stage of the refurbishment of the A-listed Pollok Stables and Sawmill.
The ongoing refurbishment, funded by the UK Government, will allow the Stables and Sawmill in Pollok Country Park to be brought back from semi-dereliction into active use as a visitor attraction to complement other visitor offerings – notably the Burrell Collection, the Highland cattle, and Pollok House – within the park.
This element of the project will begin in October. The Morrison Construction tender was found to be the best value of the four tenders submitted and evaluated through a 60% quality/40% cost weighting, the council said.
The work already completed has seen the stabilisation of the fabric of the Stables and Sawmill buildings – which were on Glasgow City Council’s buildings at risk register – and additional repair works on roofs, lighting, guttering and piping, and has enabled the design of the new refurbishment contract.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, convener for built heritage and development at Glasgow City Council, said, “The works under this new contract will complete the refurbishment of these A listed historic buildings into 21st century uses, with these complementing the fantastic built heritage attractions – the Burrell Collection and Pollok House – found within Pollok Country Park. We have invested a huge amount – and attracted significant investment – in the council’s built heritage estate in recent years in recognition of the great economic, social and environmental benefits it brings to Glasgow.”
