Enabling works start ahead of £31.5m Bishopbriggs school build

ENABLING works are underway ahead of the £31.5 million build of Balmuildy Primary School in Bishopbriggs.

Morgan Sindall Construction is due to commence the build of the new school in August, with hub West Scotland delivering the works on behalf of East Dunbartonshire Council.

The project will deliver a modern primary school to replace the existing Balmuildy Primary School, with the two-storey school set to house around 462 pupils and take inspirations and features of other new-build schools in the region – including the award-winning Lairdsland Primary School.

Enabling works will include diversion of telecoms infrastructure within the school site; formation of a new construction access off Stirling Drive, outside the school site; construction of new drainage connections to the south west of the site, on Stirling Drive; and erection of temporary Heras fencing to support the formation of the new access and tarmac repairs.

Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, Gordan Low, said, “This is an exciting project, which will deliver a magnificent, state-of-the-art school and early years centre, improving the educational experience of more than 500 local children. I am pleased that enabling works will be underway shortly, another important step towards the construction of the new Balmuildy Primary School.”

Stuart Parker, MD of Morgan Sindall Construction Scotland, added, “It’s great to once again work with hub West Scotland and East Dunbartonshire Council to deliver this new educational facility. At Morgan Sindall, we understand that schools are more than just buildings – they’re the foundation where future generations will learn, grow, and discover their potential, so it’s always a real privilege to create a lasting legacy that will serve the community for decades to come.

“From laying the first brick to handing over the building, we’re committed to delivering excellence in every aspect of this project and it’s great that enabling works are getting underway. We’ll be engaging with the local community throughout the project to help bring them on the journey with us – we really want to add as much value as we can to the area.”

The council added that the new school is anticipated to open in spring 2027, with the old building being demolished shortly afterwards.

Iain Marley, chief executive of hub West Scotland, commented, “We are thrilled to be entering the delivery phase of the new Balmuildy Primary School and Early Years facility with our close partner, East Dunbartonshire Council.

“This investment will further enhance the council’s established excellence in the provision of education services by creating inspiring, sustainable and flexible high-quality learning environments. The project will also deliver significant long-term value to local communities through employment, training, a project-specific education programme and strong promotion of opportunities for local businesses.”
