HMP Castle Huntly has partnered with Tayside Contracts, a commercially-based local authority contracting organisation, to offer structured work placements to individuals nearing the end of their prison sentence.
The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said that the initiative is set to ‘significantly’ enhance the individuals’ chances of employment upon release, as well as easing their reintegration into society, and also reduce the risk of reoffending.
The placements will provide real world experience in construction, facilities management, and catering to prepare individuals for life after prison. Participants will be supported by Tayside Contracts’ training and operational teams, ensuring they gain the practical and interpersonal skills needed for long-term employment.
Marcus Whitehead, head of offender outcomes at HMP Castle Huntly, said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Tayside Contracts, and expanding the range of work placements available to those in our care at HMP Castle Huntly.
“Work placements are crucial for people in custody as they allow for a managed and supported reintegration into the community, which, ultimately, gives them a better chance for success when they are released.”
Councillor Steven Rome, convener of the Tayside Contracts joint committee, added, “Research consistently shows that access to employment is one of the key factors in successful rehabilitation.
“By offering low-risk prisoners the chance to work with an established, reputable employer like Tayside Contracts, the partnership helps bridge the gap between the prison environment and gaining fulfilling employment.
“The partnership is a reflection of Tayside Contracts’ ongoing commitment to making a positive impact in the community, whilst providing second chances for those looking to turn their lives around.”
