Firefighters visit Bridge of Don housebuilding site as part of training exercise

Firefighters on housebuilding site

AN Aberdeen housebuilder recently welcomed a team from Scottish Fire & Rescue Service (SFRS) for a guided tour as part of routine training, ensuring its firefighters are familiar with active construction sites and the latest homebuilding regulations.

The visit, which took place at the Cala Homes (North) Green Bank at Grandhome development in Bridge of Don, gave local firefighters the chance to explore the layout of the site and speak with Cala’s team about the health and safety measures in place.

Steve Jarvie, construction director at Cala Homes (North), said, “We’re committed to fostering strong working relationships with the emergency services and the visit was a fantastic opportunity to work together to minimise risk in the event of a fire at a construction site.

“We have stringent health and safety and evacuation plans in place in case we are ever faced with an emergency situation at any of our developments, but talking the plans through directly to the emergency responders who would be the ones helping us was very reassuring. We were also able to talk them through potential risks and hazards of active construction sites that they would potentially need to negotiate.”

Area commander Andrew Wright is the SFRS local senior officer for Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray and was one of the fire and rescue service members who visited the development. He adde, “It’s really important for firefighters to have the opportunity to see properties in various stages of construction to understand the layout and types of materials used. This kind of visit is part of our fire prevention work and ultimately it will enhance firefighter safety and that of our communities.”
