Nominations sought for next RIAS president

THE Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has opened the call for nominations for its 2025 elections, which will result in a new president and three nationally elected trustees.

RIAS chartered members are invited to put themselves forward as candidates for either role, which both offer the chance to help shape the future of architecture in Scotland. The organisation said it is keen to encourage nominations from members of all backgrounds, to reflect the diversity of voices and perspectives that make up the membership.

The president leads the strategic direction of the RIAS and its outreach – engaging with members, government ministers, and committees while working collaboratively with the RIAS staff team and other UK architectural institutes. The role is for an architect with a clear understanding of the challenges the profession faces and a ‘strong, forward-thinking vision’ for the incorporation’s ongoing development and growth.

Every candidate will need 10 proposers to support their nomination. Candidates then have the opportunity to set out their priorities and ambitions for presidency, as well as their relevant skills and expertise, in an election statement and video.

The successful candidate will step into the role of RIAS president-elect from 2025-2026, before taking over as president from 2026-2028.

Nominations are also open for three nationally elected trustees. Comprising a three-year term, this role forms part of the RIAS’ revised governance structure and provides chartered members with the opportunity to share their expertise and advice on the new RIAS board of trustees.

The deadline for nominations for both roles is 4pm on Monday 21 April, 2025.

Karen Anderson, current RIAS president, said, “Being RIAS president is a great opportunity to work alongside the staff team, chapters and volunteers in support of RIAS members and to promote the importance of architecture in Scotland. I’d like to encourage all who feel passionately about the future of the profession to consider standing for president or the new board, as in these challenging times it is a rewarding experience to work with others to make a difference.”
