SEVERAL businesses previously based in Elgin’s now closed St Giles Centre have been relocated to refurbished premises in the town centre following an emergency response from Moray Council.
St Giles Centre Holdings Ltd announced on January 8 that the town’s only shopping centre would close with January 20 being its last day of trading.
Following the announcement, Moray Council launched a multi-agency emergency task force to help minimise disruption and sustain economic activity in the town centre by supporting displaced businesses through a grant scheme which would support relocations, refurbishments, and operational adjustments.
Councillor Marc Macrae, chair of Moray Council’s economic development and infrastructure services committee, said, “The closure of the St Giles Centre was a significant challenge for local businesses, and we’re pleased that the Business Support Grant, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, has helped many of them secure new premises.
“These businesses are an essential part of Elgin’s retail and service offering, and it’s fantastic to see them up and running in their new locations swiftly.”
